Audition Structure: Actors should be prepared to stay for the entire two hours on either of the audition nights (6-8pm on March 8 & 9). There is no need to come to both nights. We’ll begin with warm ups, light movement, and reading from the script, which will be done as a whole group. Afterwards, actors will have a chance to warm up vocally before individual music auditions. During music auditions, actors will perform their chosen selection for the audition panel only, and may be asked to sing some scales to determine range. After your music audition, you will be free to go.

Synopsis
Fun Home is a one-act musical by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori adapting the graphic memoir of the same name by Alison Bechdel. The musical follows Alison’s journey discovering her sexuality as it parallels coming to terms with the death of her closeted gay father. We see Alison through three stages of her life: as a child grappling with the traditional femininity expected of her, as a college student discovering her identity and experiencing first love, and as an adult coping with the loss of her father. Fun Home is a story full of heartbreak and full of joy.

Content Warning
adult language, discussion and depiction of suicide, staged consensual intimacy, grooming
*Youth actors are not involved in this content, apart from some mild humorous foul language.

Character Descriptions:
*All characters can be played by actors of any race/ethnicity. Actors playing family members do not necessarily need to look alike.

Medium Alison (19, mezzo-soprano G3-E5): A college student, leaving home for the first time and discovering that she is a lesbian. Medium Al is smart, a little awkward, and amazed at the new world she’s found herself in.
*performs staged intimacy with Joan

Small Alison (8, mezzo-soprano B4-B5): A strong-willed and opinionated kid trying to discover who she is. Small Al is curious and spunky.

Bruce (mid-40s, baritone A2-G4): Alison’s father, an English teacher by day and funeral director by night, and obsessed with the historic restoration of his house. Bruce is a closeted gay man whose repressed anger is often at odds with caring for his family.

Roy/Mark/Pete/Bobby Jeremy (young adult, tenor G3-A4): Roy is a young man Bruce hires to do yard work. Mark is a high school junior. Pete is a mourner visiting the Bechdel funeral home. Bobby Jeremy is the lead singer on a television show in Alison’s imagination.
